3 Easy things to cook with your kid

It is a rainy day and you have a bored kid at home; you don’t want them watching too much TV or maybe they simply want to do something with you. Cooking with your child not only teaches them valuable life skills for when they leave home but really gives you the chance to have some fun together and make a mess, something kids really enjoy (I am the one who has to clean up). So here are three easy ideas to get you started in case you want to try this, all of which have been tried and tested by parents and children for generations.

· Fairy Cakes:
The classic, there are so many varieties and recipes out there that there is no specific “perfect” method for a perfect cake; loosely speaking though you will need eggs, flour, butter and sugar in varying amounts, giving you both the chance to make a terrible mess in the kitchen in the process. Fairy cakes also give you both the chance to play around with the decorations, using homemade icing or any other little decorations that are easily picked up at your local grocery store; make these for Christmas, Halloween, Easter or anything really, they are easily customised to fit the occasion and keep for ages, leaving you both with a tasty home cooked snack that you and your kid can be proud of.

· Cheesecake:
Cheesecake really isn’t as hard as it looks, you just need to be careful to get the base at the right level of thickness when you pour on the mixture then so long as you don’t leave it in the oven too long, you should be ok! Ginger biscuit crumbs with melted butter (unhealthy but delicious) make a great base, you literally just put them in a zip lock bag and bash them to bits. For the mixture you just need to blend 1lb of cream cheese/cottage cheese with some lemon rind, vanilla extract, caster sugar and two eggs until smooth, pour it on the base and then bake in a hot oven until it has risen. This is only a vague recipe, but some careful experimentation will allow personal preference of flavour and consistency to the perfect cheesecake.

· Omelette:
Steering away from the desert option, an omelette won’t really keep so make sure that you eat it quickly while it is hot! Omelette’s also need a hot pan (use a use a pans.com coupon code) which, though dangerous, gives you a good chance to educate your kid on how to safely use some of the stuff in the kitchen, under careful supervision of course. The basic omelette requires you to mix two eggs with salt, pepper, a little water and some milk; you then fry this mixture in butter whilst turning the edges of the fast cooking omelette back into the centre! It is as simple as that. Omelettes however, like fairy cakes, allow your child to customise and experiment with new foods as part of the omelette; precooked meats like ham, mushrooms, peppers, pretty much anything really can be added to an omelette while it is in the frying pan to create a delicious meal.
